Shikshapatri is a very easily comprehensible compilation of 212 spiritually potent verses, written in Sanskrit by Swaminarayan Bhagwan Himself, which were incorporated from 350 various scriptures and hence they carry the essence of moral codes for everyday life. Shikshapatri was written in Vadtal on February 11th, 1826. Swaminarayan Bhagwan had then instructed Pu. Nityanand Swami to translate Shikshapatri from Sanskrit to Gujarati. The book of precepts strictly pro hibits the destruction of animal life; promiscuous behavior; use of animal food and intoxicant liquors and drugs on any occasion, suicide, theft and robbery; false accusation against a fellow man; blasphemy; company of atheists and heretics, and other practices which might counteract the effect of Swaminarayan Bhagwan’s teachings. In order to have a well-rounded understanding of Swaminarayan Bhagwan’s true mandate, we need to abide by these codes of do’s and don't's especially because it was written by Swaminarayan Bhagwan Himself. Swaminarayan Bhagwan Himself has asserted that whosoever follows Shikshapatri will never face any problems, neither in this world, nor beyond. Shikshapatri plays a very important role in helping us understand Swaminarayan Bhagwan’s behest, and tread us on the right track in our spiritual journey. Swaminarayan Bhagwan has gone to the extent of saying that Shikshapatri should be considered to be His form.
